What does it mean to volunteer at the MCLD?
Volunteer: [vòllən•téer] (n) somebody who performs an act or participates in a transaction without being legally bound to do so and without expecting to be paid; (v) to perform or offer to perform work of your own free will.
The word "volunteer" comes from the Latin "voluntas," meaning "free will" or "deliberate choice." A volunteer is someone who makes a
deliberate choice, freely and not because of any obligation, to participate in a not-for-profit activity. The act of participation in such an activity is called "volunteering." In its essence, volunteering is a self-initiated activity that is not in search of monetary remuneration. Nevertheless, there are many forms of compensated volunteering to which some economic value is attached. Typically, this compensation is in fact, an attempt to cover the expense of volunteering, such as gas, food, or in some cases lodging.
Anyone can volunteer, and anyone can volunteer to do things that are close at hand. Moreover, volunteer activities forge connections with others, and these connections bring a sense of happiness and fulfillment. Aside from the definitions uncovered in the dictionary, true volunteerism occurs when the act of service is engaged in and completed enthusiastically and with a spirit of charity, without regret or ungrudgingly.
Volunteering
The MCLD's volunteer network is a critical resource. Many of the programs, activities, and events are planned and successfully carried out by the volunteers. Because the MCLD programs are substantive, and our program offerings are diverse and continually expanding, the MCLD requires a sizable human resource base to deliver the rich high quality experience to hundreds, and eventually thousands of youth and parents. Therefore, it is clear that without the generosity of our volunteers, many youth and families would not have the benefit of the MCLD experience and the MCLD would be a completely different organization. The MCLD values its volunteers!
Whats' in it for me?
Volunteering offers the greatest opportunity to gain personal fulfillment by providing an invaluable charitable service to those in need. Providing a valuable service to others without the expectation of anything tangible in return is one of the greatest ways to build a civil community, affect change, and advance a worthy cause.
Volunteerism with the MCLD also offers a unique opportunity for professional development. What does this mean to you? When you are looking for opportunities to enhance your professional capabilities, come to the MCLD to gain the practical experience that can serve as the right complement to your technical expertise.
Volunteering at the MCLD gives you tools for your personal and professional growth and success. We want the volunteer and the participants to maximize the benefits of the MCLD experience and to develop valuable lifelong friendships.
Volunteerism has many rewards. By volunteering with the MCLD you can:
· feel fulfilled;
· help youth build character and self-esteem;
· help youth achieve academic, college, and career success;
· help promote achievement and success with African American youth;
· share your knowledge and experiences with those who most need it;
· gain invaluable networking contacts;
· acquire important management skills;
· develop leadership skills;
· refine your presentation skills;
· learn important mentoring and coaching skills;
· receive professional development training that would normally cost you or your company additional training money; and
· be associated with a respected organization that’s making a difference.
In addition to the professional and personal growth, you receive the satisfaction of knowing that you are giving back to the community by being a
part of the solution. You have the opportunity of being the life altering catalyst in the life of a young person…in fact, in the lives of hundreds of young people. As a volunteer, you can make the difference.
